Philosophy:

Developing a relationship with a compassionate, skilled therapist who can help you be present with current life stressors or past traumas, can be an important part of healing. 

In my practice I work with adults and adolescents with a variety of issues but specialize in issues related to sexual trauma (childhood or adult), childhood emotional/physical abuse, domestic violence, lack of parental attunement, and growing up in a home where alcohol and drugs were abused. 

I also work with couples who are experiencing challenges in communication, connection and how past trauma effects this. I provide clinical supervision to therapists. I am a certified Gestalt Therapist and will help you become more present and aware of your body-emotions. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), Internal Family Systems (IFS) and inner child work. I was the Director of Counseling at Women Organized Against Rape and have practiced at women & youth centers.

A life-long dancer, I have also been studying, developing, teaching and practicing body-oriented psychotherapy since the mid-‘70s. In my work I draw from a combination of body and energy techniques, including structural myofascial release, Muscular Therapy, Gestalt Therapy and Continuum. I also offer hands-on psychedelic preparation & integration sessions.

My experience as an improvisational dancer developed my respect for the sacredness of the moment, the wisdom that can emerge from the unconscious, and the importance of the relationship between client and practitioner. My passion is listening to creative intuition: my own, my clients’, and my students’, to allow the next correct action, movement, sound, idea or insight to emerge clearly.

Philosophy:

Over the years in my work with children, couples, families, as well as those struggling with substance use, I think about rocks. Specifically, rocks that weigh us down emotionally from difficulties in childhood, troubling relationships, and challenges one faces in life. Many clients come into counseling with the belief that they are inherently flawed. Inevitably, during our work together we uncover some of the rocks that weigh them down emotionally. The resulting awareness can be quite effective in relieving or reducing self-defeating messages.

Parents often take their struggling child in for counseling. As a family therapist, I value the support that comes from the family system and work to empower the family to address the stressors they face together. I also specialize in work with couples and those in the LGBTQI community.

An important lesson I have learned throughout my career is how, as social beings, we tend to do better emotionally when we have a witness to our pain. In-person psychotherapy provides such a witness, as it can allow a client to feel seen in their pain and their life’s struggles.

We work hard, but kindly, looking at patterns of thought, emotion, and action that are stuck in some way – making it difficult to have ease and stability and make personal or professional transitions. We use body awareness to bring awareness to the mind. We look at the present moment and the choices available. We consider the past, considering how we may learn to suffer or cope with challenges in a certain way in childhood, when we really don’t have choices, and then experience ourselves as not having choices in adulthood. Our work together builds the awareness of new  possibilities for freedom and growth.

I have a strong interest in caregiving, and in how personal history informs the caregiving role. Past trauma, as well as difficulties inherent in the caregiving professions can set people up for personal unhappiness, exhaustion and professional burnout. And yet, there is great potential bound up in this suffering. I am inspired by the unfolding I have witnessed in the people I work with, the unfolding of self confidence, self expression and the enhanced ability to love, to work and to thrive.
